From the city of Glasgow to the un-spoilt beauty of Dumfries and Galloway this Southern region of Scotland has lots to offer the holiday visitor. Moorland and lochs are guarded by rugged mountains and the countryside is home to rich and diverse wildlife, you may even be lucky enough to see a Golden Eagle. If you are planning your self catering holiday to Scotland, don’t overlook this wonderful area. You could take a walking holiday in the Galloway Forest Park, 300 square miles of forest and moor land.
Heading north you will come to the romantic region of Ayrshire and Arran where Robert Burns was born in 1759 in the village of Alloway. Visit the Burns National Heritage Park which is the ideal starting point for your tour of Burns country. If the excitement of the city is what you want then a holiday in the Clyde Valley region will give you the best of both worlds. Shopping, culture and the arts in Glasgow city, sampling what the 21st century can offer or a visit to the New Lanark UNESCO World heritage site. This is an 18th century cotton mill and mill village, an award winning visitor attraction with working exhibits and interactive displays that mean you can really experience what life was like 3 centuries ago. And finally the Scottish Borders, the Gateway to Scotland, famed for its tweeds and tartans and probably some of the best fishing in the UK.
Despite being in the Southern corner of Scotland this region boasts miles of beautiful and rugged coastline. One of the main coastal towns in Kirkcudbright which lies halfway along the Solway Coast. Once a bustling port its fortunes have changed over the years and Kirkcudbright is now a quiet and lovely town with its 18th and 19th century heritage beautifully preserved. The whole southern tip of Scotland is dotted with formal gardens and country parks for summertime strolls and picnics. Loch ken, between New Galloway and Castle Douglas is a watersports mecca with waterskiing, powerboats, rowing, sailing and windsurfing for the more adventurous; and fishing and bird watching for the more peaceful amongst us.
