Wick, Highlands, Caithness. Property 10620
Flexible start dates available.
This traditional terraced holiday home is to be found on a quiet residential street in the historic town of Wick. You might wonder why a terraced house would be called the Corner House but it is named after the family that have owned it since it was built, not its position on the street! The Corner family are very proud of their local history and have displayed a few photos and memorabilia from the past on the stairs. The house has been traditionally furnished which helps it have a warm, family feel and includes an original brass bed. Wick straddles the River Wick and extends along both sides of Wick Bay and this historic town has been known as a Royal Burgh dating from 1589. Major improvements by Thomas Telford around the 1800s improved the harbour, therefore bringing the herring fishermen and when he bridged the River Wick and improved the connection to the North Bank, Pulteneytown expanded quickly to house the ever increasing population. The building work was paid for using the money confiscated from the Jacobite chiefs after Bonnie Price Charlie’s failed revolution. In Pulteneytown you will find the Wick Heritage Museum, giving visitors a feel for the towns past and, in particular, its herring years. Nearby is another important visitor attraction, Pulteney Distillery, the most northerly distillery on the British mainland. There are many walks starting from the town itself including an interesting one to the Castle of Wick, a Norse stronghold, reputedly the oldest castle in Scotland. This also passed the outdoor swimming pool – The Trinkle – maybe for only the braver among us! These local walks show that a car may not always be necessary to visit this area and the owners offer a collection service from all transport links so no need to worry about moving your luggage around. But if you have brought your own transport, just 16 miles north of the town is the famous John O’Groats, where many long distance travellers end and begin their marathon journeys to Lands End. A few miles from here you can visit The Queen Mother’s home in Caithness, The Castle & Gardens of Mey. When The Queen Mother first saw this castle it was in a poor state of repair, she was recently widowed and was looking for somewhere to escape the public eye. She could not have got further away! She saved it from ruin and it became a much loved holiday home. Now open to visitors and kept as it was when she was in residence, it is a must visit place giving a fascinating insight into her interests and her love of life. Wick is on the main highway (A9) linking John O'Groats with southern Britain. The Far North railway line links Wick railway station with southern Britain and with Thurso, the other burgh of Caithness. Wick Airport is on Wick's northern outskirts.
